Problem
The High Cost of Heating and Cooling
Solution
Building codes require that HVAC systems provide at least 15 cubic feet
per minute (CFM) of outdoor air for each student. The cost to heat this
air in the winter, and cool it in the summer, uses a lot of energy dollars.
The typical school spends up to 30% of its energy budget on heating and
cooling the outdoor air. Pittsburgh Air Systems can provide energy recovery
systems to reduce the cost of conditioning outdoor air.
Another solution to the high cost of outdoor air is filtration. Utilizing high
tech filtration techniques and in conjunction with the Indoor Air Quality Procedure
of ASHRAE Standard 62-2001, filtration can be used to clean return air and reduce
the need for outdoor air. Pittsburgh Air Systems can provide particulate and
gas phase filtration systems that may reduce the outdoor air requirements up
to 66%.
For new facilities, systems that reduce the need for outdoor air have the added
bonus of reducing the HVAC system capacity requirements, thus reducing initial
capital costs. This double benefit, reduced capital costs and yearly energy savings,
can make a big impact on construction and operating budgets.
